Benjamin, who comes from Argentina’s second city Cordoba, talks about his love for Armenia’s second city Gyumri. Having grown up away from the Armenian community in Cordoba and thus feeling detached from a part of his ancestry, Benjamin decided to pack his bags and make the 13,000-kilometre-long journey to Armenia.In this episode, in which Benjamin gives us some really profound responses, we talk about the incredible story of how his great-grandparents made their way from Western Armenia to Argentina, how his connection to Armenia has grown thanks to the Birthright program, how he fell in love with the city of Gyumri and how he has gone from speaking no Armenian at all to speaking the language confidently in a matter of months. In today’s episode we are joined by our first non-American volunteer; Egor Afonin! Egor hails from the magnificent city of Saint Petersburg, Russia and has a versatile skill set, working as a translator, a voicing actor, a video editor and a part-time teacher. Being 31 and, therefore, on the cusp of no longer qualifying being able to participate in the Birthright Armenia program, Egor decided that it was high time to come and volunteer in Armenia to discover the country of some of his ancestors. In this particularly humorous episode, Egor tells us the fascinating story of his connection to the Armenian nation, about the advantages of volunteering in Gyumri, about his experience in Armenia as someone who did not know much about the country before his arrival, and about how Birthright Armenia has helped to uncover a part of his heritage that had been somewhat ‘lost’ over generations. Armand comes from Orange County, California, USA and has just graduated from the University of California San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in economics and international affairs. Before he begins his master’s degree this September at the same university, Armand decided to spend his summer as a Birthright Armenia volunteer in the stunning city of Gyumri. In this episode, Armand tells us about what it was like growing up in a very Armenian environment back home, his thoughts on Gyumri and how it compares to Yerevan, the important volunteering work he has been doing here, the differences he has noticed between Armenians in America and Armenians in Armenia, and much more!
